Two loveable characters, Bink & Gollie, have rollicking fun whereever they go and whatever they do. These funny characters create episodes of comical incidents that tickle the funny bone. The book is lighthearted and fun. Here's an excerpt: "Hello, Gollie," said Bink. "What should we do today?"
"Greetings, Bink," said Gollie. "I long for speed." I read this book with pleasure. Bear is a warm, loving character who has a sleepover with his friend mouse. Bear wants the house to be quiet but mouse keeps on disturbing him through the night. Finally, Bear gets upset and says, "Will this torment never cease!" wailed Bear. Mouse responds
like this, "Sorry, Bear. Good night, Bear," whispered Mouse, tiptoeing back into bed as quiet as a ...well, you know." This I believe is the climax of the story. Then there is a turn of events which I found adorable.
I guess you'll have to read this book to discover the end! I recommend this book highly. I give this book five out of five books! Entertaining!

More Children's Book Reviews!

Candlewick Press sent me some books to review. Their distributor is random house so the books actually are delivered by them. Anyway, I wanted to start with the board books.
Potty by Leslie Patricelliis an adorable book that features a young child who needs to go potty. The child asks "Should I go in my diaper?" and then later, "Should I go in my potty?" Everyone is happy including the child's parents at the end when the child accomplishes the task at hand. The illustrations are colorful and fun!
Another book that features the same young child character is called Tubby also by the same author/illustrator. The child says, "Tubby time!". The story is about a playful time in the tub. The child goes on to say, "I count my duckies." and "I wash all around my belly button." I recommend these two board books. They would make a great gift for children ages 1-3. I give them 5 out of 5 books.
     More reviews coming soon!

A Great Website!

I discovered a link to a great website for authors and illustrators. http://www.justonemorebook.com/about/ provides author interviews and podcasts. I have been a member since 1994. This was the beginning of my career as an author. I was published in many magazines before I joined as a member. This organization is wonderful, full of people who help you and guide you through the many questions one has about becoming an author. I am on the listserve where I meet many authors all over Canada. They are in a series called DOT TO DOT IN THE SKY.
The first book that I would like to review is Dot to Dot in the Sky STORIES OF THE MOON by Joan Marie Galat, illustrations by Lorna Bennett. It begins with moon myths, moon phases and observations of the moon. "A very long time ago, Rabbit lived in a remote forest, far away from any people.
Rabbit was a superb hunter. He set traps to catch birds and small animals....."
"The moon always rises in the east and sets in the west."
" By studying and dating lunar rock samples, scientists discovered the Moon
                        is 4.6 billion years old."
"Scientists still study the rock and soil brought back from the Moon."

There are many moon myths that are captivating for a classroom or children at home to share in this book plus wonderful facts about the moon. I appreciated the glossary at the back of the book that I could refer to when reading. I learned a lot about the moon and you can too if you pick up a copy!
Dot to Dot in the Sky STORIES OF THE PLANETS was my next book to read.
It begins "You gaze up at the night sky and see a multitude of sparkling dots of light. You know everything you see isn't a star--but where do you begin a search for the planets?...Have you ever noticed a bright object in the night sky that was not twinkling? You may have spotted a planet."
This book is full of information about the planets and myths from the ancient world that surrounds each one.
                        "Earth-GAIA
At the beginning of time, there was only a dark, shapeless emptiness named
Chaos. Mother Earth --called Gaia--was born from Chaos. Nobody lived on
Earth and Gaia was lonely until she looked up and fell in love with the sky,
                        named Uranus."

The illustrations are vivid, bright and colorful. I really liked the book--a great read!

Another book in the series called Dot to Dot in the Sky Stories of the Zodiac includes a 'Glow in the Dark Star Map'. This is an innovative idea to make the book sparkle even more! This book is about discovering your own zodiac constellation, celestial objects and ancient tales.
The Little Milk Dipper's handle is in the Milky Way, as if someone is
scooping up milk to serve witht the tea in the Teapot.
Here is an excerpt of the fourth sign of the Zodiac:
Cancer the crab has a small part in Greek mythology. It appears briefly
in a story about the hero Hercules, who was famous for his noble bravery
                         and enormous strength.
I thought it was interesting to learn about my zodiac sign and others. I enjoyed this book!

The final book that I read was Dot to Dot in the Sky STORIES IN THE STARS. I discovered there are many shapes in the sky like a bull, eagle, swan, dragon or a queen!
An excerpt that I found interesting: "The Big Dipper is the starting point for finding several constellations because it is one of the easiest star patterns to spot."
This book examines fifteen constellations and myths.
One Greek myth tells about the a great singer and musician named
Orpheus. He played the lyre so well that even wild animals would
come to hear the music. After his death, Orpheus was placed in the
sky as a swan, near the stars of his lyre.
All four books are a recommended read! I give all four books a rating of five out of five books!

p.s sorry about the formatting, I'm not sure what went wrong!

ACCESS BOOKS AND "AIR LIFT TO L.A."

Access Books and Airlift to LA

All children should have the opportunity to learn to read!

ACCESS BOOKS AND "AIR LIFT TO L.A." DELIVER BOOKS TO COMPTON SCHOOL ON OCTOBER 2

Los Angeles – As part of their ongoing commitment to strengthen inner-city school libraries throughout Los Angeles and beyond, Access Books has joined forces with a team of Canadian authors to help impoverished families gain access to books. The event will take place at Ralph Bunche Elementary (16223 Haskins Lane, Carson, CA 90746-1092) on October 2, 2010 at 9 a.m. This school is one of 25 elementary schools in the Compton Unified School District (CUSD) that is in desperate need of books for its 450 students.

Access Books, "Air Lift to L.A." and a team of volunteers from Bunche will spend October 2nd revitalizing the library by painting murals and cataloging brand new books. In addition to the books, Access Books will provide a reading rug, rocking chair and sofa to create a warm and inviting environment for students. Five authors from Canada will be on hand for the event and to give fun and exciting presentations to the students.

The participating authors are:

Rob Weston, author of Silver Birch award winner Zorgamazoo

Kari-Lynn Winters, author Jeffrey and the Sloth, On My Walk, and other award-winning books.

Jill Murray, YA author of Rhythm and Blues and Break on Through

Wendy Kitts, Freelance Writer, Book Reviewer, and author of a soon-to-be published picture book from Nimbus Press

Helaine Becker, author of more than 40 books for children including Silver Birch award winners Boredom Blasters and Secret Agent Y.O.U.

Sadly, only 48 percent of Bunche's students are scoring "proficient" or "advanced" in English & Language Arts on the California Standards Test. Research has shown that the best predictor of how well a child will learn to read is the number of books to which he or she has access, but 61 percent of economically disadvantaged children don't have age-appropriate books at home. The students of Bunche Elementary fit this profile: 90 percent live at or below the poverty line. According to a 2009 report from the Jumpstart Foundation, communities ranking high in achievement tests share a common denominator: an abundance of books in their libraries.

California's Department of Education recommends 28 library books per student, according to the February 2010 draft of its School Library Standards. Bunche, however, has a mere three books per student. Therefore, Access Books has set a goal: Collect at least 5,000 books for Bunche's library and classrooms. Many of these will be brand new, popular fiction titles – books that have been carefully selected to get students excited about reading.

Access Books' partner for this endeavor, "Air Lift to L.A.," grew wings after Canadian children's author Helaine Becker visited a Long Beach elementary school and saw the empty shelves. Shocked and saddened, she rallied her Canadian colleagues and started a book drive. "The conditions [in Los Angeles] are on par with the worst of the Third World countries," she writes on the "Air Lift to L.A." Facebook page. "Actually, they are worse, because in much of the Third World, people are doing their best to raise their standards, while in Los Angeles, conditions have deteriorated abysmally in the last ten years."

Bunche has just moved its campus library into a new, larger space to afford room for growth, but unfortunately, many of the shelves are bare. The library assistant nicknamed the library "The Dream Shop," but with so few books, its dreams have yet to be realized.

California ranks last in the nation in funding for school libraries, spending less than one dollar per child. Although the 2011 federal budget proposal includes a $400 billion investment in education, there's no mention of federal funds specifically geared toward school libraries. According to Sandra Barnett, head of the American School Library Association, "the budget is proposing to take away the last access to literacy for these kids in high-poverty areas." The American School Library research data clearly shows that students with access to school libraries and good books score higher in state reading scores and are more interested in reading.

"I think the big issue is that we really need to make reading part of school and make reading fun and interesting," said Rebecca Constantino, P.h.D., the founder and executive director of Access Books. "And that starts with having a good library."

About ACCESS BOOKS: Access Books provides quality, high-interest books to Southern California's most impoverished school libraries. Since 1999, they have donated more than a million books to school and community libraries in the greater Los Angeles area. Access Books has been featured in USA Today, the L.A. Times, the New York Times and School Library Journal among many other media outlets. Access Books' founder, Rebecca Constantino, is a recipient of Oprah's "Use Your Life" award. She has published over 100 articles and a book in the areas of literacy development, equity in education, urban school and cultural perspectives of language acquisition.

Give a Child a Book, She'll be Happy

Give a Child a Library, She'll be Literate

P.O. The first chapter draws the reader in and from then on is full of action with the main character Tara. It begins, "The patch of sunlight at the edge of the forest had an odd look; dirty yellow and striped. Tara squinted hard and before her very eyes it moved, took shape, stood up: a yellow-eyed hyena!"
The hyenas take Tara's brother and two friends away and it is up to her and her friends to find them. The story is set in Morni, India. Suraj, Tara's brother, needs them to rescue him. Can Tara overcome the obstacles she faces with Zarku, her enemy with the third eye? Can she prevent him from doing away with her? Can she convince him to let Suraj free?
     Here is another exciting excerpt:
The hyena's teeth ripped the edge of her kurta, but Tara
didn't stop. The snap of its jaws was unnaturally loud.
She reached the edge of the clearing. The hyena was
gaining on her, its teeth grazed her ankle. She shrieked
and went crashing into the trees.
There are many exciting, nail biting chapters in this book. The Silver Anklet, a young adult book, is a great read. I give it four out of five books!
Thank-you Mahtab for sending me an autographed copy!
     All the best, Lily

The Kayak by Debbie Spring

'The Kayak' is a novel published by Thistledown press. This novel was entertaining and a page-turner! It begins... "THE CHOPPY WAVES RISE AND FALL. My kayak bobs like a cork in the swirling waters of Georgian Bay." The first line enticed me to read the entire novel. It drew me in for more. Teresa, a sixteen year old, uses a wheelchair. Every summer she goes camping and kayaking. Her kayak is her freedom.

One day, she is out in the water during a storm and rescues a windsurfer named Jamie. Their relationship flourishes and she learns eventually that her insecurities can be conquered.

I give this novel four out of five books. It's called Finger Rhymes for the Holidays, Seasons, and Celebrations. Most of the action rhymes are put to music on the CD like songs for Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha, Easter, Buddha Day, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Martin Luther King Day, St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, Fourth of July, Canada Day and much more!

I wish I could tell you how much I am thrilled about this book and CD but the feeling is hard to describe.

Here's an excerpt from the book:

Finger Rhymes for the Holidays, Seasons, and Celebrations is a resource

guide for teachers in the classroom or parents of children in grades PreK-K.

These rhymes can provide enrichment during gym or any subject lesson. I really enjoyed reading and chuckling at the same time.
Here's an excerpt:

"I hope all one hundred and one guinea pigs get adopted soon," said Webster.
"Except for you Astro," said Stink, whispering to his favorite guinea pig.

Three characters, Stink, Webster and Sophie go on a quest to find a good home for 101 guinea pigs. When I was starting out as a writer, I began with writing poems for children. I didn’t know where to send my poems. I hadn’t had a clue. But then I thought, who better to ask than a local librarian. She would know the answers.

So I went to the library one day with my poems in hand. I asked her where is my market? Can you help? She suggested a market guide called Children’s Writer’s & Illustrators Market by Writers’ Digest. I looked through the book and decided to send out my poems. I eventually found a market for my poems in the magazine publishers section. The librarian also suggested other reference books too.

Sure, writing poems or books is great but what happens if you don’t know how to market. The poems or book gets left on the shelf. I spent hours reading books that had everything to do with how to market my work. There’s allot of help out there if you search for it.

There are so many writers out there that write well but do not pursue publishing because they don’t know the first step. I am saying that if you simply go to your public library, you can succeed by letting your librarian steer you in the right direction!

Mine did. In my mind, she is my best friend.

I dedicate my first published book, Read to Me Rhymes: Seasons, published by McGraw-Hill Children’s publishing and taken over by School Specialty to my “best friend” my librarian. My son, Jure talked to him for a while, met him at his car, showed him into the school. The coach chose Jure because Jure received the Athlete of the year award last year. Steve Nash was at my son's school because he was promoting his foundation to help underserved children in communities of B.C., Arizona and Paraguay. He also gave a talk about how important it is to follow your passion and your dreams and to set goals and work on achieving the goals everyday.
Everything he said and everything he stood for gave me motivation in my own life as a children's author. His words gave me encouragement to keep going as a children's author. Every once in a while, it is so gratifying to hear words of positive reinforcement that one can achieve one's goals and don't give up. In the children's writing world, there are many times when a person just wants to quit. There are so many rejections in this line of work, it's incredible! Judy's substitute teacher suggests that Judy obtain a tudor so her parents find a college girl to teach Judy math. Judy is thrilled about all the things she discovers in college from the clothes that girls wear on campus to the creative paintings in art class. Here's an excerpt:
At college, all that mattered was that you (1) use your imagination

(which Judy had loads and loads of) (2) be yourself. It begins, "Morning light. Warm and bright. In the trees, Honeybees!" Being a children's author who rhymes, I appreciate the concise and tight rhymes of the book. There is an economy of words that is appealing. It is to the point, educational and entertaining at the same time. The illustrations are detailed and lively as well. I recommend this book and give it four books out of five books!

There's a Babirusa in My Bathtub Fact and Fancy about Curious Creatures by Maxine Rose Schur and Illustrated by Michael S. Maydak is a book for children ages 7 to 12 years old. There are rhymes in this book too featuring animals like a babirusa, Civet, Colugo and Dingo to name a few. Here's an example of a rhyme in the book,

Matamata waiting all alone,

Looking like a leafy stone.

Along comes a fish and bites his back

Thinking leaves are a tasty snack

I give this book three and 1/2 books out of five books.

Writing Books for Children

Are you starting out? Do you want to start writing for children? It's not easy but you can do it! With patience, perserverence and consistency, you could write a whole picture book or short story for a magazine.
What do you do? Where do you go to begin such a task? The simplest of all materials but they are the main materials, are a pen and paper. What are these you ask? Today, in a world filled with technology, these items are becoming passe. But I think pen and paper are the fundamentals of any good writer. You can put them in your purse or pocket and go anywhere with them without having to carry a laptop. Some people can not even afford a laptop, the pen and paper are inexpensive. Sometimes they are free too. Some business' give out free pens and there is always paper around too.
My powerpoint presentation explains the 'where to start' process in detail and will guide you to a children's writing experience. My book, Finger Rhymes Content Connected Rhymes for Science, Math and Social Studies is published and already out at the bookstores. I asked the University of Victoria bookstore to carry it and they did. Here's the URL:
http://www.scholastic.ca/clubs/classroomessentials/images/0809/CEC_winter2008-2009.pdf
The book is on page 9! I hope this helps with sales. I wonder how my book got on there? Does anyone know? Please e-mail if you do.

I have been working on a new book since last August. It took me about 5 months to write since I have three teens. I am so busy. Anyway, its called FINGER RHYMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS, it is going to come out with a CD! Awesome. The rhyme is set to the rhythm of "Over in the Meadow". Here's a sample page, "Over in the Arctic, Paddling in the icy sea, Lived an old mother walrus, And her little calves three. "Kick," said the mother. "We kick," said the three. So they kicked with their flippers, Paddling in the icy sea."
I believe this is a good read aloud for children since it has rhythm, rhyme and movement. How many books? I would give it four out five books. Well done!
Inside All by Margaret H. Mason, illustrated by Holly Welch, is a picture book that tells about "the comfort of knowing that they belong, that they are part of something meaningful." My favorite lines in the book are "Inside you Is a heart Pure and glowing. Inside your heart Is all Love overflowing." I like this book. I give it 3 out of 5 books.
My First Hike is a board book written and illustrated by Catherine Maria Woolf. The text is simple and heartfelt and tells about a grandfather taking his grandchildren on their first hike. I recommend this original board book, 3 out 5 books.

My New Books

I have two new books to announce! "One by one, the students and even teacher are gobbled up by the sneaky snake." Most children ages 5-8 would know that one can not really be swallowed by a snake so it's not a big worry. "They saw hippos hopping in the dirt. They saw monkeys eating chocolate dessert. But they didn't see the anaconda ponder...then slide from the water and start to wander...
I enjoyed reading the story to myself and to my nephew. I think it deserves 3 out of 5 books.

More Book Reviews

CAVES by Sally M. Walker, part of the Early Bird Earth Science Series, consists of five chapters. What is a Cave?, Kinds of Caves, Stone Icicles, Animal Life and Exploring a Cave. Near the end of the book, there is an excellent "A Note to Adults" section where the importance of sharing a book with a child is emphasized. My favorite section of the book is Animal Life where fascinating animals are brought to light. Amazing animals who are found in caves like foxes, cave spiders, cave shrimp, snails and glowworms to name a few. "Some cave fish don't even have eyes."-published by Lerner Publications Company.

More Book Reviews

ROAR! by Margaret Mayo, illustrated by Alex Ayliffe is another book from my mail that I enjoyed. It begins, "Bold lions love roar, roar, roaring,
while cubs play--racing, chasing,
scrambling over lionesses and --oops!--tumbling.
So roar, bold lions, roar!"
The book goes on to describe other animals like elephants, zebras, tigers, giraffes, monkeys, hippos, leopards, pandas, kangaroos and grizzly bears. "Bouncy kangaroos love jump, jump, jumping..." There are mostly four lines per page and colorful cartoon like illustrations so that a young child would be captivated enough to hold their attention by this book. Score: Three books out five books.

Book Reviews

In my mail, I received books to review. Here are some of those books.
A picture book called DINO-HOCKEY by Lisa Wheeler and Illustrated by Barry Gott, is a funny and entertaining. It is published by Carolrhoda Books, Inc. Written in rhyming couplets, the book would appeal to Dinosaur and hockey fans.It begins, "The game begins at half past six, when dinos grab their hockey sticks. They plan to win on icy floors--MEAT-EATERS vs. VEGGIESAURS!" The illustrations are clear and well defined. I think this picture book deserves 3 books out of 5 book rating. (Which means its a good read)
Christmas Is Coming is another picture book by Anne Bowen and illustrated by Tomek Bogacki that I found entertaining especially with Christmas coming soon. A little bit on the wordy side but the meaning is all there. Anna, a young girl, tells her new brother about the signs of Christmas approaching. I liked this page: "You know Christmas is coming
when you see lights
like ribbons of stars shining in the dark--
glittering,
shimmering..."
Anna discovers that the best present of all is...well you'll have to check out the book to find that out.
I'll be back with more reviews next time.

Rainforest Week

I come across many books along my travels. All the best, Lily

How many rejections have you received lately? I have received many but don't let that get you down. Read your rejection carefully. A rejection can sometimes be a disguise, the editors sometimes give you hints or suggestions if they like the work because they want you to resubmit. Some editors do this initially to 'feel you out' so to speak. They want to know they are receiving work from a hard working author that is willing to commit to a job. Editors need dedication from an author to get the work done. That's why many of them stick to authors they have known for years and ones they trust.
If an editor writes a personal note, that means they are encouraging you to improve on the manuscript. Editors are busy and usually do not write personal notes but if they see something that they think has potential, they will scribble something on the letter. Even though they have rejected your work, they are telling you that you have something here and don't give up until you have polished your work completely.
A form letter, though, is a rejection that is to the point, meaning that they do not want the work at all. In the form letter, if they do mention 'we wish you best of luck elsewhere'. I think they do mean this part. Try another publisher!

Author Responds

Hi Lily

I attended a writing workshop at Port Joli NS led by Peter Carver and Kathy Stinson with five others. Also of interest is a publishing house website called www.tundrabooks.com
A best book called Writer's Market - Where and How to Sell What You Write is available at Barnes and Noble Bookstore.
Another best book is found at http://www.acornpresscanada.com/bubbaex.html
called Bubba Begonia, You'll Be Sorry!
Check it out!

Thanks to all that wrote in, keep it coming!

All the best,
Lily Erlic
Children's Author

Best Publishing House Websites

Every once in a while I will be featuring best websites.

Authors and their Books

Wow! Madonna wrote The English Roses in September 2003. The book is illustrated by Jeffrey Fulvimari. All of a sudden, a famous singer writes a children's book? Why? She is entitled to produce her creativity as we all do but let's face it, did she receive any guidance or instruction on how to write a picture book? Are there true elements of a picture book in her story? Is it worthy of a Mr. Christie Book award or a Newbery Medal? Read the book and then answer these questions if you please.
Billy Crystal, another famous person, penned a picture book called I Already Know I Love You, illustrated by Elizabeth Sayles. You can find it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0060593911/ref=sib_dp_pop_ex/103-6828779-0887843?ie=UTF8&p=S00C#reader-link
The famous authors will get automatic recognition when their books hit the shelves. This is their advantage. Thank goodness, the less famous, like myself can at least write this blog and get published and get read right away! I think it's a made up term to prevent writers from writing. Writer's block, I believe is mistaken for "Writer's Break". Every writer needs a break from writing, perhaps "writer's block" is meant to be defined as a writer needing a mental break from the strenuous activity of writing. I only say it could be strenuous if a writer is working hard on a novel or any other intense piece of work and that writing is doing too much but does not realize it until they form a "writer's block". Perhaps it's just the brain, saying, "slow down, give yourself a break!"

Writing a Picture Book

How do you write a picture book? The first thing you do is to sit down at your computer or find a pen and paper and write, write and write. Get your idea down for the story. Make an outline or scribble what is going to happen in your story. What is it about? What happens? How does it end?
Take another piece of paper or word processor and begin your story in an exciting way. Make certain that first line will grab the reader's attention. Draw the reader in...no pun intended. For example, beginning a story like "The Cat walked across the street." is a bit boring. "Jody was a cat who liked to dance across the street" makes a first line more intriguing. It makes the child or parent reading the story think, "why does this cat dance?" or "where is Jody going" or "what is the cat about to do next?"
The reader wants excitement in the story. If the reader, usually a parent or a teacher is reading the book to children and finds the book exciting then that excitement will be reflected in the adult's reading of the story and in turn excite the children. All will be happy including the publisher!
In Arctic Waters by Laura Crawford published Sylvan Dell Publishing, the story begins "This is the ice that floats in the Arctic waters." This beginning is exciting. The reader is wondering what is going to happen next. The rhythm of the story helps carry the reader through and want to read more as well.

Author of the Month

Beatrix Potter is the author of the month. Have you ever watched "Miss Potter"? I watched it more than five times. It's an all inspiring movie. She passed away in 1943. She seemed to have lived a full life because she expressed her passion through Peter Rabbit and many of her other stories. I love that line in the movie when it says, "There's something delicious about writing your first word, you never know where it will take you..."
Every ounce of that movie tells me this woman had a gift for stories. I think there is a gift in every writer or author who aspires to succeed in children's writing. I know it's hard to break in with your first book but don't give up. If your passion is strong about writing for children, like Beatrix Potters then you can succeed too just like she did. I believe that if we use the writer's gift then we can go accomplish beyond anything we can imagine. We never know what's around the corner.
